Yes, keying the PTT line on a FM rig usually results in excessive chirps
and clicks.

Depending on the rig, one solution can be to leave the rig in xmt mode, but
modify the output circuit to key one of the low power driver stages.
Sometimes it can be as simple as looking at the schematic and finding the
right low level driver stage and keying its Vcc directly with the keyer
circuit.   Some experimentation is necessary.   My 222 beacon uses a very
very old Hamtronics FM transmitter board using this trick.
