The 106.5 crystals at Ax-Man Surplus (www.ax-man.com) came from ITI/GE
Security as scrap or surplus parts. They are purchased from the lowest
bidder but as Don said, you can buy a bunch of them for the price of one
TO-5 crystal. The crystals were intended for room temp operation.
One type of crystal was marked 106.500MHz and it was intended for use in
a simple non-tuneable oscillator. Another crystal type is labeled
106.5027MHz and was intended for a tuneable oscillator, it could be
pulled several KHz at 319.5MHz where the transmitter operated. If you
look, you may find a 106.500MHz crystal in a sub-mini crystal can, a
small version of the HC-49 can, about 1/4" by 3/8". This version is the
most physically sturdy crystal and is easiest to fit in the TO-5 oven
with a little work. For a few bucks you can buy an assortment of
crystals and try them all, then choose the best one. If I remember
right, one of these crystals was used in the brick oscillator of Bob
W0AUS's original 10GHz transverter and still seems to be working. I
think some other NLRS members have used them in projects too.
