If the 746 is like most Icoms, there will be a leading FULL POWER spike for
a few milliseconds, even if the power is turned down. This can easily
damage transverters, preamps, power meters.... You can try adding a fixed
ALC voltage to lower the power, but make sure and test thoroughly. The
other option is to use a high power attenuator in line. I did that with my
706 for an IF. I needed 1mw so used a 30db pad rated for the full 25w and
small SMA pads to get down to 1mw. It sure wastes battery power, but will
protect the transverter.
