Hey Tom and all,
I haven't tried any sort of omni-directional antenna for these contests, but
as Zack says the problem is that if a guy isn't pointed at you, you don't
hear him and he doesn't hear you. I had to run this contest with my very
modest 6 element beam on 432 MHz and it is just pretty rough sometimes to
get the guys to hear you. I can imagine that with something having no gain
at all, it'd be darn quiet.
I didn't get a chance to use my homebuilt 432 quagi for this contest, but
the 222 quagi seemed to play just fine even 10 feet off the ground with the
"armstrong" rotor. I'd sure recommend buying or homebrewing some gain
antennas for the next one and I think you'll be a lot happier.
I do suspect, too, that if you had spent some hours calling CQ using CW on
432.100 you would have worked more stations; they would have heard your
omnidirectional call and peaked up on you, then they do all the heavy
lifting. One beginner to another......
