Jon - This is a timely post. I have been intrigued by Rovermania and
the NLRS commitment to it since I started roving. The UHF contesting
activity here in the southwest is low, though, and so is my score.
Despite activating 9 grids in the August UHF contest, I failed to
crack 1000 points with just 432 MHz. Still it was fun.
My dad, WA0OML, lives in Brookings, SD, so for next summer's UHF
contest I am planning to visit my Dad and participate in Rovermania,
just to see what a UHF contest with good activity is like. As of now I
have 220 MHz and 432 MHz in the rover; whether or not I add more bands
before next summer is still up in the air. It will be nice to run 432
MHz with more power.
Unfortunately, my permanent QTH is outside the club area, so I cannot
contribute to the club score, and as I am roving outside my club's
territory I cannot contribute to their score either, although I am
usually the only member active on the VHF/UHF contests. It is nice to
see the VUAC recommending adding club competition to the UHF contest.
I think that will help participation. Also, I wonder if you have
considered a cumulative club contest; combining hte results from
several contests. Kind of like how the club competition for teh
separate CW and phone SS are combined.
I welcome suggestions as to routes and possible locations to operate.
I will keep you updated on my plans, so keep me in mind when you are
planning Rovermania next summer. - Duffey
