If you can run everything off 14 VDC, I suggest overdriving an automotive
alternator from a a small gas engine.  Most of these alts have good internal regulation, and
are inherently current-limiting.  I expect that with the addition of a current-operated
engine throttle, you will save a significant amount of fuel and noise.

The Ford alt in my car was a new pull, cost less than $100, and is rated at 130 amps.

The free cookie is the fact that the alt will give you its power at around 800 cps,
3-phase, in case you need higher voltages via transformers.
