Thanks for the suggestions, i will put them to good use!  However upon removing the cover and looking inside i have a lot more work ahead of me.  Does anyone have one of these amps so that they can take a picture or the area where the MRF240A predriver is located on the board at the back end?

This one has two resistors that come from the ground towards the transistor, but they are broke off in the middle and the other end is gone without a trace, so there is no telling where they went to, or their values.  It looks like someone attempted a pretty poor repair, its going to take some time to remove the large globs of solder and sort this out.

Other than those two broken resistors and the poor solder job it appears to be intact.  As for the working condition of it that's yet to be determined!

It might still require removing the predriver, from the specs online the MRF240A has a max input of 5w with 40w output, so in theory removing the predriver i should be able to drive the finals with up to 40w and see if they are any good before doing much more.
