Hello NLRS land.
It really didn't occur to me until later in the day, but we sure had a very
good showing of rovers at Aurora'08 yesterday !! In attendance was
K0MHC/R, KC0IYT/R, K9JK/R, WB8BZK/R, W0ZQ/R, W9FZ/R, N9TTX/R, WA0VPJ/R, W0JT/R, and
probably a few others that I missed.
This summer represents the fifth year of Rovermania ! and its like no other
event. As Rich, N0HJZ, stated in his comments on winning the Wesslund Award,
"there are grids all around us just waiting to be activated". The ARRL's
UHF contest (Rovermania V this year), is August 2 and 3. Remember that this is
a short 24 hr contest and is 222 and up. Because of the ever increasing
local and regional activity and because of the "smallish" UHF antennas, its
August UHF contest is arguably the premier roving contest. Although gas prices
will definitely be a hindrance, several of the rovers that I talked to at
Au'08 said that they would be out and about for Rovermania V, possibly using the
June VHF contest for a tune up. I know that W0ZQ/R will be out and about
August 2 & 3.
Although its a busy summer ahead of us, please consider targeting August 2 &
3 in your calendars and give some thought to pursuing station improvements
on 222 and up.
Last, we all agreed that we missed having a multi-op station, perhaps from
Buck Hill. "Us rovers" would really really really like to see an effort to
establish a mult-op this year, again perhaps from Buck Hill (or elsewhere). I
have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that such an effort could easily place
very high in that category ! Give it some thought - there is spare equipment
& antennas around so doing this is more of an organizational challenge than
anything else.
73, Jon
W0ZQ/R
