[NLRS] Logging

Hi Mike,
My logging isn't to much different than yours. I use ARRL "loose-leaf" pages, not the bound Log Book. But it doesn't have to be that, either. I'd be happy to bring a sheet to breakfast Saturday if you'd like to see one.
But a log isn't hard to make up. Use a Spreadsheet, and print out a page. All you really need is the information:
DATE TIME BAND {POWER} MODE STATION SENT RECEIVED {NOTES}
more or less in that order. I found long ago that being consistent with the order of entries makes it a lot easier to both log when things are hot 'n' heavy, and to find errors after the fact.
I do not use computer logging. For me, its a lot easier to write than it is to type, especially when portable or Rover.
For submitting entries, I simply "Xerox" the log pages, and add to the cover sheet. I no longer transcribe. I used to transcribe into a spreadsheet, do dupe checking, etc., and then print the finished log. ARRL rules don't allow that any more (except fore 10GHz and Up Contest).
If I need a Dupe Sheet, I do it after the fact, not during the Contest itself. Yeah, its a tad more work, but there's no time DURING the contest (or as a Rover sitting in the driver's seat of the car). Nothing irritates me more, especially when I was a Rover, than having some bozo spending 5 minutes KEY DOWN -- OK, mike open -- while "I fill out my log book." The Contest exchange should take no more than 15 seconds. Don't make me (and everyone else!) wait while you find a pencil, find the log book, fill out the header, write the entry, ask for 5 repeats (while giving a 5X9 report! which I don't need anyway) all the time transmitting the rustle of paper, etc. [END SOAPBOX]

Subject: [NLRS] Logging
Hi all,
I'm sure I've asked about this before so I'm sorry if it seems like old hat but I'm still stuck.
I was just reading about the sprints and it made me think of contesting in general. I like to participate in them when I can but I frequently am left feeling bad because I don't send a log in. This is something that I haven't really figured out yet. I've always just used paper and pencil to start with, but I use either a book, or a format that can't simply be sent in as is and the time required to transcode it as it were prevents me from sending it in.
I guess I'm looking for ideas, and specifics, not just I use xyz program. How do you use the program? Do you have a computer right next to the radio? Does it control, or talk to the radio? How do you type and talk at the same time? (I only have 2 hands lol) Perhaps stories of how you evolved into what you currently use?
Perhaps this could be a forum discussion at Aurora? Or perhaps people could simply offer advice on line here.
Thanks again all,
Mike
