And along the lines of what Donn was saying, I've run my laptop in the car
running DeLorme StreetAtlas (no terrain) and use a USB GPS "puck".  The
five volts for the GPS comes from the USB port.

Again, in the software, I can turn on Lat/Lon grid but it doesn't really
give Maidenhead grids at all.

I know, this isn't really what you are looking for.

I turn on the breadcrumb dropping and it makes for interesting trails.

The USB GPS pucks are available on ebay for no more than $45--sometimes less.

On the laptop, the screen saver routine interupts DeLorme however. So I
have to turn off screen-saving.
