I spent most of my day off today (it is President's day, for you
non-government employees who wondered) making updates to the NLRS web site.
The main thing that will be of widespread interest is that I *FINALLY*
got the antenna testing results from Aurora 2005 installed. You can get
to them from the main page, or from the Aurora 2005 sub-page.
I also cleaned up a few longstanding bugs like broken links and such,
removed the "club affiliation" from the "States and Provinces Above 50
MHz" event, since it does not apply to that event, and made sure that I
clarified the "this year" vs. "next year" breakfast dates so no one
would accidentally glance at the wrong year and get the wrong date.
I also updated some of the calendar pages, especially April 2006 and
July 2006, when several events of interest are happening.
Most of today's effort went to fending off an attack by the SpamBots.
As many of you know, there is a web page that allows you to send a
message to the webmaster (me), and another one that allows you to send a
message to any or all of the club officers. I figured that these pages
were immune to SpamBots because I didn't think that SpamBots were smart
enough to fill out web forms. Well, they have gotten smarter, and I got
several hundred junk mail messages in my inbox over the last couple of
days! I have modified both pages in a way that I hope will plug the
leak in the dike so that I don't get washed away by the spam. If you
use either page, you will notice two things. First of all, the forms
are now very picky about having ALL of the fields filled in. No more
blanks are allowed. Secondly, each time the page is called up, a
pseudo-random 5-character string is generated, and the last field on the
form requires you to enter that 5-character string to validate that you
are a human instead of a SpamBot. We'll see how well that works in the
long run, but in the short run, it has stopped the flow of trash into my
inbox for today at least.
There are other updates that were made in January and earlier in
February which I didn't already mention in a prior announcement, such as
adding a new collection of NLRS logos, updating links to the ARRL
contest results pages, fixing the maps to the two Old Country Buffet
locations where monthly breakfasts are held, adding maps to Aurora 2006
pages (shamelessly stolen from the Aurora 2003 pages), and adding N0KP's
10 GHz beacon to the beacon list.
As always, the edit log is available from the home page so you can see
what has changed.
