John, thanks for the analysis.
I'd like to see more emphasis on increasing the number of rovers (newbies
and others) with "limited" band capabilities. Remember that we all started
our roving with a band or two. Perhaps our club(s) could run our own
competition to promote more rovers. Let's challenge the experienced rovers
to a team competition. That is, each experienced rover can team-up with a
newbie rover. The competition could be based on the sum of each team's
score. That is, the sum of the experienced, multi-band rover's score added
to the newbie's limited band score. The overall purpose would be to increase
the number of operators who are exposed to the challenge of roving. Maybe we
could have a traveling trophy that would be awarded to the winning rover
team at the NLRS Aurora conference each year?
To start this off, I'd be willing to sponsor a newbie rover from our neck of
woods (Alexandria, MN area). With the help of some other locals we can
scrape together the necessary gear to get a newbie up and running on several
bands. "Team Runestone" could be up and running for the 2006 UHF contest.
Are there any other takers out there?
73, Jim
