Matt,
I don't feel confident in giving a definitive answer to your question as
my RS experience is somewhat limited, however, I live in a decidely
deciduous part of South Minneapolis - there are tall, leafy green trees
everywhere. Except for where there are houses!
I have no horizon and can noy work anyone from home under normal
conditions except for Gary, 'LJC, who literaly lives one block to my
north down the alley!
Be that as it may, using rainscatter I have worked the following stations
from home; Russ, W0LMS (S, Mpls - DX ~4 miles), Bruce, W9FZ, (Mendota
Heights, ~ 5 miles), KC0IYT/P (Eagan, ~5 miles), Jon, W0ZQ/P (Burnsville,
~12 miles), and Bill, K0AWU (Grand Rapids, ~145 miles). All with very
loud signals. At the same time as I worked Bill last year, I heard Mike,
KM0T on backscatter at about S5, however, he went QRT before I had a
chance to call him. For that latter storm I don't think I used any
elevation but fired through the ~50' trees that are perhaps 250 yards
north of me. I was not in rain.
Sorry to have not really given an answer other than "circuit and see"...
