Hi Jon,
The location Bruce has described is about the best there is over there... at least its the best I ever found. If you look west, the Twin Cities are in the "notch" on the horizon... bearing is 267° T. Of course this is no good at night. :-)
Stay out of the fields. I had a guy yell at me several years ago. The ditches are plenty wide. There are two field pull-offs, across from each other, at the eastern end of the area. If you past them, you are too far to be able to have a clear shot to the other areas.
These are the areas I've worked from there, with little or no trouble. Up to and including 1296 (10w, long looper). Never had anything higher than 1296 when I was Roving.
Milwaukee/
Eau Claire 121°T in the space between the trees ~300-400 yds from you.
Chicago 136°T (Elgin, actually - AA9D multi-op)
Cedar Rapids 175°T
Rochester 195°T
Des Moines 200°T
Twin Cities 267°T
(Obviously) never worked Mike from there, but the path looks good.
KM0T 238°T
Depending on what you need for set up space, or maybe how comfortable you are in operating close (REAL close) to the pavement, EN35 is very close to this location also.
EN35 Return to WI79, turn S. Go ~1-1/4 mi south to the top of the hill. Turn west onto Hill Rd. At the top of the hill is where I've operated from. Little traffic.
There's also a spot for EN34, but I can't rember where it is. Sorry.
EN44 (near-by) is a little more difficult. I've used the Wal-Mart (?) parking lot, just north of I-94/WI-25 exit. My favorite spot, though is a mile or two farther north and off of WI25.
Take WI25 north from the I-94 exit ~2 mi. Turn east on Cty BB. Go up the hill about 1/2 way. There's a field pull-off on the north side.
CAUTION - CAUTION There are overhead power lines here !! CAUTION - CAUTION
I've never had a problem with them, but....
Don't waste time looking for a location under the tower that visible to the SE. Its a great spot, but all private land (high-buck homes), and simply no place to even pull off the road. I've tried !
If you want to go to WI79 (EN45) from here, or even if you're going directly to EN45, I'd recommend this route: Exit I-94/WI25, north on WI25 to Cty BB. Turn WEST, and then an IMMEDIATE right turn (north) onto Cty J. ~1/2 mile along, Cty F goes straight, and Cty J curves to the left... FOLLOW Cty J ~2 mi to the first major turn to the west... ~1-1/2 miles... don't know the name, but its the only paved road going to the west you will have come to. Take it, and its about 1-1/2 mi to WI79. Turn north on WI79 and proceed as per the previous directions. Its about 5 mi up to the turn for the EN45 operation location.
I don't recommend following Cty J all the way... its a nice drive, but slow and windy, with farm traffic if in the daytime.
