Hey NLRSers (particularly those in the northern reaches of NLRS-land),
One of the Chicago-area gang who occasionally roves, Wendell, N9REP, has a
buddy that is getting married in the Boundary Waters the day AFTER the
September VHF contest, so he is considering a rove up that way. He has
equipment for 50, 144, 220 FM, and 432 (I *think* he has "Light", too, but
that would probably require a QTH visit).
He's asked the following questions (maybe some of you saw these on the VHF
Contesting reflector):
1. Can anyone comment on activity in the Ely area? Would likely be
EN37,38,47,48.
2. Would it be better to hit the Lake Superior shore and work stations
across the lake?
I replied that there are a few VHF-active folks up that way (I specifically
mentioned Bill, K0AWU, in Grand Rapids and I seem to recall seeing/hearing
of an occasional rover up that way) but suggested that he'd likely have
higher QSO totals from a route that took him closer to the Twin Cities. What
I couldn't offer was if there were any good operating spots up toward Ely or
what kind of activity he might experience along the shore of Lake Superior.
Any other suggestions? I can share Wendell's e-mail address if anyone would
like to get in contact with him directly.
My question: Will folks be active in the September contest or will the focus
be on getting ready for the second weekend of 10 GHz to the exclusion or
reduction of activity in the September VHF Contest?
73, JK
