Another avenue that I've experimented with and have had
encouraging results with its using the Expanded Spectrum
Systems Time Machine Board as the I/Q source to feed the Flex
Radio PowerSDR program. Works quite well. You do need to be
cognizant of the actual frequency vs. displayed frequency
though. The TM board also has a pair of mixers to take I/Q
base band (~audio) inputs and make a TX signal out of it (I
haven't yet tried this). The TM board is only $135 kit and
$170 assembled. See:
http://www.expandedspectrumsystems.com/
However you do need to come up with a LO source for the ESS
TM board, although you can supply it with an xtal as well. To
use an external LO source ESS has a LO1 daughter card ($35)
for the TM board that you feed a 4X frequency to, so for
28MHz transverter IF work you feed it a 112 MHz signal @0-5
dBm. ESS also has band pass filter boards for all the HF
bands ($17/each).
I've also use the TM board to feed signals to I2PHD's SDRadio
program as well. It is an RX only program that works quite
well too. See: http://www.weaksignals.com/
All in all lots of fun stuff to play with out there in the
land of SDR if you look for it.
