Re: Incentive licensing. Most of us, me included, rose up through the ranks.
I studied, learned more and got the Advanced and Extra Class. It was good
for me and many others. Was it extra work? Yes. Did it upset the apple cart?
Sure. Was it needed? I think so.
There were a lot of doom and gloom predictions about volunteer proctored
licensing. I took all of my tests in front of that tough old retired CPO in the
Chicago FCC office. I don't think that volunteer licensing has been a bad
thing; although I will recognize that a few have cheated their way onto the air --
and those are only the ones who've been caught.
As far as the League working against Canadian hams, I am not familiar with
those circumstances, but I can only imagine that the League thought that certain
power and frequency practices in Canada might be harmful to US amateurs. If
that was the case, I'm all for it. BTW, I went to college in Canada, have a
Canadian mother-in-law and am a member of an organization promoting cross
border commerce.
W2NSD used to characterize the League as a "publishing company with delusions
of grandeur." Maybe, but they are all that we have promoting and protecting
our interests at this time. I like their publications, their operating events
and their organization.
We are all entitled to our opinions, but I have never seen a statue of a
critic.
