Subject:10 GHz on Labor Day; a thriller

What a thrill to find signals from a new location from
other stations at 60 to over a hundred miles away. My
S meter usually reads S7 with no signal present.
Simpson EN33tw 60 miles WB0LJC is S9+10 from Chubb Church,
Mel needs truck height to skim above the corn.

SW Chatfield EN33ut 69 miles WB0LJC is S9, nothing heard
from W0GHZ or WA2VOI

N. Wykoff EN33vr 76 miles WB0LJC is S8-S9. Another shot
over the corn. Can't see anything of the horizon from
the ground.

W. Harmony EN33xn 90 miles WB0LJC is S7 and 44 report
K0KFC joins in from EN34FR S7 and 33 report.

N. Mable EN43co 97 miles. Can't find the spot I thought
I remembered where it was. Range Safety officer says
"You're lost aren't you?" In this situation, look around
for the highest hill and go to it. Stopped on the crest
of Fillmore County 24 about 2.5 miles west of Cty 43.
WB0LJC is S7 and 44 on SSB, K0KFC is S7 and 33 on SSB.
Headphones really help here and need 3x3 formatt to
piece it together. GPS reads 43d34.075m, 91d47.516m good to
29 feet. Converts to EN43CN for 159km or 99 miles to WB0LJC
and 191km or 118miles to K0KFC. Local Gentelman asks what we
are doing ? Were you in the signal corps ? Invited us over
to his place, thinks it is the second highest in the county.
We checked it out and around the third Silo there is a clear
shot toward Chubb Lake. He says if I see you here in two
weeks, I'll know what you are doing. He also said 5 mile
corner is very high, Junction of 43 and 18. There is a good
chance that that was the place I was looking for. I guess
four out of five isn't too bad. We ran out of time b4
I got a chance to try Spring Grove. Confident I know the
spot and it probably would have worked also.
15 foot boom Cushcraft 13B2 worked very well. Fun Day. Thanks
for being on the other end.
