Hi Jon,
I use an old Garmin GPS II+... got it cheap at the time because it was out
of production. Yes, it does have six digit Maidenhead square coordinates.
I believe that most (all ?) Garmin units do. This is NOT true of other
manufacturers.
OPINION: You need one with an external antenna connector... i.e., no
"handhelds." Unfortunately, handhelds seem to be a little (but not much)
cheaper. Any of the units work MUCH better with an external antenna,
rather than just putting them on the dashboard. A good active patch
antenna will run maybe $45-$60. Magmount. Mine's about 1.5" sq, and 3/8"
thick. One the old grey van, you never saw it.
Currently, GPS seem to be $150-$200 for non-handhelds... check e-bay, not
just local stores. Don't overlook Fleet Farm, and Gander Mountain, either.
Good luck.
