I have Garmin GPS 3 plus.  I displays six digit Maidenhead grids along with a
host of other data on an easy to read monochrome screen with back light.  The
unit has built in map, you can adjust the map setting to display a lot of detail
or a little, very hard to get lost.  It has an accessory plug that will output
GPS data to a laptop and allow you to power the unit via external 12 volts.  I
have a bean-bag mount that puts the unit on the dash and it stays right where I
put it.  Overall, works very well for mobile and handheld at $275.00

If you are looking for a unit that will be used 99% handheld,  the Garmin eTrex
line might be better choice since they cost much less and still display
Maidenhead grids.  Basic eTrex units have less features, less controls but will
work fine for $110.00.  As you move up the eTrex line the features and controls
start coming back in.   The eTrex Venture at $150.00 is nice because it has a
serial port plug to output GPS data.
