Hi all,
Here is my take on the day activities.
I worked Mel at all three sites he tried. Signals were
weakest over the shortest path to NE Rochester, go figure.
None of the paths were in the clearest directions from the
Chubb Church site. Chubb Church is located in Eureka Twp,
just west of Chubb lake at the intersection of Cty 17
(Highview Ave) and Cty 84 (267th St W). This is just south of
Lakeville. The views to Mel had trees about 1/4 mile away.
I moved after the first contact with NE Rochester to try to
clear the trees. It didn't help all the sites we worked had
tree blockage.
Signals were as follows, NE Rochester 52 at the first site.
53 when I moved about 100 yards west. N Fountain T was
easy with 57 signals. S Lanesboro Hills signals were weaker
but still very easy to find at 53 to 57 with QSB. The distances
are 52 miles for Rochester, 77 miles for Fountain and 87 miles
for Lanesboro.
We were using the Rochester repeater for liaison when Mel was
near Rochester. When he went to Fountain he couldn't get in to it.
Mel and Jon used a cell phone to set up their contact at Fountain.
Then Jon let me know what was going on by using the Rochester
repeater. Jon had to leave so I set up my beam and Mel and I
went to 2M SSB for liaison. We used 2M when Mel went to Lanesboro.
Good signals on 2M, just like 10 GHz.
Jon and I did work direct from Chubb to Jacob Ave but signals
weren't great. I had to point right into the Church about 100 yards
away. I did elevate the antenna so we probably used tree scatter.
Next Jon moved to Idell Ave to try bounces of the Mpls buildings.
I found two peaks for Jon signals. The best was in the direction of
Minneapolis. A weaker peak was about 20d to the east, which
is through a thin line of trees. His best signals were 42-53 with QSB.
It would have been nice to try more bounces but no one else was
available. It should be possible to work direct to Monti and Elk River.
We will have to try another time. I hope we can have someone at these
sites the next time we try with Mel.
The Chubb site holds some promise of good DX to SE MN, but
the best sites are west of those we tried Sunday.
