[NLRS] LCD flat panel versus traditional CRT monitor RFI
issues

Hi Jim,
In my opinion, LCDs are the only way to go!! I went to laptops several
years ago to get rid of the sweep coils in CRTs. (IBM laptops were/are
rated the best for EMI.) I've since added a 1GHz Celeron system in a full
metal case, and with an LCD. No EMI/RFI.
In terms of usage, the LCD is far superior to a similar CRT. The LCD I
have is a 15" one... and ALL 15" are usable. Measure your 17", and I'll
bet that you've got 16" or less actually usable. On top of that, the
sharpness, clarity, and color and contrast are far better than all but the
very best glass CRTs.
The biggest (only ?) problem for LCDs is price. They are still a bit
pricey, and somewhat more expensive than CRTs. The one I got I've had for
a year, and prices have come down a far bit since then. Somewhere between
$250 and $350 of 15-17" ones (not "top of the line" brand names, of course,
but still good ones.)
Good luck.

to HSMS and again, ran into the problem of RFI generated from my Sony 17
inch CRT type PC monitor........ I've run the traps of trying to
eliminate RFI with brute force filters, power and signal line choke
suppressors, shielding as much as possible plus physical separation and
this has greatly improved the PC to the point of
non-issue..........however, the monitor still is a source of numerous
birdies...... I've avoided this issue in the past by using paper logging
and foregoing direct serial port interface for controlling the rigs.....
But, still want to play with WSJT, JT44 & some of the other
techniques...... In the past, I simply turned off the monitor when I wanted
to operate (which is not possible with these newer digital modes that use
the sound card interfaces).....

more traditional CRT (hi-voltage) type from the perspective of RFI?" Any
and all observations appreciated......
