Hi Dan - welcome to the reflector. Just a couple of comments on your
transverter questions. First of all transverters are great
performers and can do a great job on the weak signal bands with some
really hot front end RX. Most of them can deliver enough power to
drive a good sized brick as well so you can have a nice station on
any given band with a transverter. Your HTX10 is probably a good
candidate for a transverter on 222. The thing I never liked about
the HTX10 was the lack of CW out of the box. I guess some folks have
added a mod to there rig to get on CW - I will try to paste a link
for that here: www.qsl.net/n2ffl/htx10
(found on qsl.net search for n2ffl)
As for future bands 432 is an obvious choice and 1296 is great too.
The kits can be built to save a few bucks - but plug in play is great
too! Please consider the 902/3 band too - I can work almost every
station on 902 that I work on 1296 with less power (and antenna) it
really is a great band. (CW will be an issue with almost any of the
bands 432 and above - keep that in mind). One thing that you need
to look for is a hard keyed PTT output from your IF rig. That comes
in really handy when connecting those transverters. Don't worry
about PTT LO vs high - either will work. You may want to check with
other HTX10 owners to see what they have found. I have a Tentec
xverter for 50Mhz too that works great with the RF sensed PTT, but
down the road if you are keying microwave units RF sensing is no
good. So that's my opinion - others here may have a different one -
that's the great thing about this forum you get (typically) more info
than you ask for! Good luck on the projects - hope to hear your new
station on the band by the next contest.
