Hi Bill,

Just to clarify, when you say that you replaced the on/off volume control
knob, do you mean that you replaced the entire potentiometer unit? The first
suspect would be the volume control.  If so, it is very common to have one
terminal of the volume control connected to circuit ground. If the ground
connection is broken the volume will be maxed out. So I would check the 3
pot terminals of the volume control for resistance to ground.  One of the
terminals should be at or near ground potential.  With a schematic I could
be more specific.
