I was reading on a thread about an old documentary where someone asked why people talked differently in old movies, radio broadcasts and they mentioned part of it was due to the characteristics of radio.  Someone then proceded to provide a video that explained it in more detail:

I always assumed it had something to do with the microphones and sound reproduction technologies of the time, but it never really occured to me that it was something that would need to be taught.  Did any of you ever have to learn to use this accent?  Did any of you have classes in school for it?  It doesn't sound like it was taught long, but it is fascinating.
