Problem is not so much the antenna but the radio. The modern car radios have the AM section cheapend down My Buicks and Packards from the 40s and 50s will pull in AM stations where the Town Car and the Crown Vic stand there speechless. Both of them have preamps in the trunk with the rear window antenna,

Hi Joe,
I know just enough about his to be dangerous. The short antennas are
active antennas, that is, they have an amplifier at their base, and need
a source of 12-volts. I don't know if the DC comes from the radio, or
just out of the general wiring harness. I see some vehicle specific
adapters that have both a coax with a Motorola (standard care radio)
plug, and wire for DC.
