Joe,
What you have is a galvanometer, an extremely sensitive zero-center
micro-ammeter. The were typically used to zero a Wheatstone bridge
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatstone_bridge> when making precision
resistance measurements. There are a lot of these kicking around,
sadly, and nobody cares. Nice box for a crystal set.
