[NJARC] Replacing a tapped volume control?

Dave,

All my experiences with tapped volume controls were with the tap
providing _variable_ loudness compensation at low volume settings. I
had an amp with a volume control that was made of unobtanium, so I
replaced it with a pot without the tap connection. The result was loss
of bass at low volume settings, acceptable for that application. There
really is no way, that I can think of, to eliminate the tap and maintain
the desired fidelity at low levels.

It's possible that it is part of the AVC, but I've never seen it used in
such a way. Is the tap going to an RC circuit in the audio stage? If
so, then it definitely is for compensation and not AVC.

Hope this helps.

Bill
