That's perfectly normal.  Generally daytime reception is best above 10 Mhz and weak below.  At night it switches to weak reception above 10 MHz and excellent conditions below 10 MHz.   These rules don't apply when you get into VHF (30 MHz) and above.  Broadcast DX is nighttime hobby.

These aren't absolute rules since distance, power, atmospheric conditions, etc. all need to be brought into the big picture.

...but...when the sun goes down...the reception is pretty darn good...

...using the same antenna...even.

( it won the last DX contest...even though is literally was smoking for a 
while )

Is this reception 'phenomena' to be expected??

PS...looking forward to be with ya'll as I'm most likely moving back to 
Jersey.
