Hi Henry,

Robert L. told part of the story. I'll fill in a bit more. E-bay is
generally the only reasonable place, as you'd be fighting minimum order
requirements if you go to a manufacturer.

The size of the wire is given by a pair of numbers like 175/46. That's
175 strands of #46 enameled wire. The size of the individual strands is
targeted on a particular frequency range. #44 or #46 is what you want
for the broadcast band.

As a long-time crystal set builder, I remain unconvinced about the real
world advantages of having a coil with a Q of 1000 versus the 200-300
that attainable with normal wire.
See my article here: http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/Coils/Coilwiz.html and
the main xtalset page: http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/xtal/xtal.htm

What are you up to? If you've never played with a high-performance
crystal set,I suggest that you keep it simple by buliding a PGSX Mark
II, and then adding the "Front End" tuner to make it a really good
crystal set. Not a lot of expense or complication, and then you can use
it as a point of comparison for further development. It's likely better
than 99.99% of all the crystal set ever built.

Have fun,
Al
