Hi Joe,

My guess is you experienced 'skip' due to a temperature inversion. The south and central US experienced a very hot day yesterday which causes this.

Some technical info is here ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inversion_(meteorology)

Scroll down to "Electromagnetic Radiation (Radio-TV"

Your stop was most likely in a weak signal area for the Hawk, which allowed the other station to over ride the local one.

Hams get excited when this happens as it allows some long distance communication.

When we had TV channels 3-6-10, etc, and used TV antennas, this was common during the warm months. Sometimes you would see a station from Texas over ride the local one.

Hello.

I had something interesting happen while I was driving around, listening to
the radio.
The station I usually listen to in this area is 105.7 The Hawk, which is a
classic rock station. I was stopped at a light on route 9 in Howell, and
started picking up 105.7 The Beat, an R&B station located in Meridian, MS. A
quick point-to-point map search tells me that is over 900 miles. I didn't
think that really happened with FM. (Especially in a car with only an
in-glass antenna)

As usual, please pardon my ignorance if this is nothing spectacular. I am
inexperienced, so such occurrences are like magic to me.

Joe
