Interesting stuff this Melamine
Foam, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine_foam. Sound insulation in studios,
who knew?
Since it is purely abrasive, I wonder if it might harm the lettering I want to
protect? I will test it on the dial if the Barkeeper's Friend doesn't work out.
Thanks Dave,
Jim

Jim,
The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is one product (in addition to Barkeeper's Friend)
that is more than marketing hype. It may not be the solution to the problem you
have at hand, but it might be worth a try, and it's probably something you'll
want to keep in your bag of tricks anyway. It really does work "magic" when
cleaning certain types of materials. Probably won't be good for dealing with
moderate-to-heavy rust, but might work wonders on light rust (perhaps along with
a little weak acid.) It's basically a very fine, sacrificial sanding medium.
I've also found that even very strong phosphoric acid (stronger than what's in
Naval Jelly) which I use for heavy-duty rust removing, doesn't affect sound
paint in many cases, but you want to be careful to neutralize that afterwards.
Have you thought about trying electrolytic rust removal? Depending on the type
of corrosion (I've not seen this method used on anything other than iron oxide)
this might be a good option.
Good luck; let us know how it turns out!

I have this Howard shortwave radio that I would like to restore. If you are
familiar with this radio, you know that the dial is usually corroded and just
plain nasty. I was wondering if something like "Barkeeper's Friend" would be a
good cleaner to use to restore the dial?
I initially thought to use something like "Naval Jelly" or Rustolium "Rust
Stripper" both of which are featured in YouTube videos for chassis cleaning.
The local Lowes only had the Naval Jelly and looking at the label directions,
it seems that it is quite strong and removes everything. Ruth suggested looking
on the cleaning products isle where we found "Barkeepers Friend". I figured
that anything used on cookware had to be gentile and hopefully safe to use on
lettered metal dials.
I took an old chassis that I had scrapped and tried it. Looks good so far but
as a test I will expose the chassis to the elements to see if something more
then wiping with a paper towel is needed to neutralize the oxalic acid which
seems to be the active ingredient.
So my question to the group is what is the tried and true rust remover that
won't attack paint and lettering?
Jim
