Aha – you did not mention the transistor. That does make a difference. We used to do this trick with WD-11s and 01As close to 40 years ago. Back then we kept the glass envelope on the open filament tube (looks more original that way), and used micro-T transistors or FETs under the socket soldered between the pins. It did not take up much space as we used 1/8 watt resistors and the transistors were tiny and flat. Made the tube stick out of the socket maybe an eight of and inch or so. Take Care – Mike

Hi all,
Ran across some information on the web attributed to a "Tom P." from a Colorado radio club that is using a 1N34 diode, some resistors, etc to salvage 01A's by removing the glass envelope, and soldering these componets into the base on the correct pins. I have a schematic of it, if anyone is interested.
