Hello Scott,
Regarding operating your BC-348 w/o headphones, all you
need is a center tapped 6.3V filament transformer to do the job. Connect the
two leads from the primary of the transformer to audio output of the BC-348
via the second audio jack on front of your BC-348. Please bear in mind that
the audio output device (speaker or headphones) sits within the plate circut
of the receiver and therefore has B+ on it at all times! It's better to make
your connections with the receiver in the OFF position. When that is safely
connected, take your 4 or 8 ohm speaker and connect the center lead of the 3
leads of the xfmr to one side of your 4 or 8 ohm speaker, and any one of the
two existing leads to the other side of your speaker. That's all there is to
it. At this time. turn your radio on and listen through the newly hooked up
speaker.
You may want to try to hook up your speaker to the other lead left
unconnected to see if your audio is better. Sometimes it is and others it is
not.
Let me know if you need a filament transformer I can have one in the mail to
you.
Happy Monitoring!
Joe Cro N3IBX
