I will limit my response in this message to the comments on auctions.
1. Auctions are an important component of any collecting fraternity
whether it be automobiles, baseball cards or marbles. It is a fair way
to recycle our artifacts and it helps older collectors who are thinning
out their collection as well as newbies who are just starting theirs
2. As a club we provide a valuable assist to estates and widows as well
as to those who are just tired of some of the items that they have
accumulated. We need to do this to keep the artifacts in circulation
and prevent them from going into the dumpster or into scavengers hands.
Remember, we are only temporary custodians of these treasures and have a
responsibility to move them on in due time into other willing hands.
3. Club auctions are presently a significant source of income and could
be more if we choose to do so.
4. Those who have commented in the past couple of days all seemed to
think that regular auctions are a good thing and enjoy them and consider
them to be a benefit of membership.
5. Now as to e-Bay!! It is not a vice and it's not going to go away!
We can chose to ignore it or use it to our advantage. There are various
schemes that could be used to keep club auctions a benefit to the
membership while still putting some of our assets on e-Bay. In fact we
are going to have to do so one of these days as we are currently sitting
on too many valuable assets that will eventually need to be converted
into $ to fund club activities. There is only one ingredient needed
that so far we have not been able to come up with namely; - who is
going to do it? E-bay activity is not a small amount of work, we are a
large club but too few members contribute to the body of support the
club needs. This is the type of work that could be done at home or as
an off-site group or whatever but if you really want to help the club,
put your name on the list as willing to help out by doing e-bay sales,
packaging, shipping and whatever else is needed to make it happen. As
for details as to how to make it fair, let's get the volunteers lined up
and then work out the details. That's all that is needed to make it happen.
6. As to past auction sales that have landed on e-bay, remember that
when you buy it, it is your property and you can do whatever you like
with it. There is no implied restriction that you are not free to
dispose of it outside the club or trash it or cannibalize it for parts
or whatever.
7. As for having a club table at swap meets, there is nothing wrong
with that idea but it also calls for a lot of volunteer effort. Who is
going to schlepp it, where is it to be stored between meets, who gathers
up the unsold stuff at the end of the meet? Most members are concerned
with what they themselves are bringing to a meet and/or what they are
hauling away as purchases. Probably as much or more work than putting
it on e-Bay.
