[NJARC] Digital Radio

I heard an anouncement on the radio about the impending conversion of radio to a digital format just as TV is being converted next year.
Is this a real possibility?  What would be gained?  It appears that such a move would make our radio treasures obsolete and relatively worthless!
I know the few stations I listen to (FM) that have converted to so called HD are now much harder to receive and don't appear to offer any advantage.
Would like to hear some comments.
