That does sound pretty depressing.  Some members of the David Sarnoff Radio Club have been telling
me how amateur radio people are adapting satellite and internet technologies to their field.  They
make it sound a lot different from what you describe at Timonium, and more appealing to young
prospects like your grandson.  Have you sent a version of your email to the organizers, with some
suggestions on what they ought to try to offer instead?
