Hi Scott , Your assumption makes perfect sense. I have wired my dim bulb tester in the same manner. The dim bulb is in series with my Variac. When I am convinced that the current draw is ok i switch the switch across the bulb making a lower resistace path hence the "bulb out" position. Marty
