[NJARC] DC Power in NYC?

I had read that before electric power was widely available, DC was used for residential use along trolley lines that used it for their motors.  This gave rise to the 120 V DC radios that are still out there.

  I did not realize that, until very recently, Con Edison was supplying DC power (a la Edison) in Manhattan. Who knew? This NY Times blog link was found on the RAR+P (rec.antiques.radio+phono) newsgroup and falls into an AC vs DC debate in the comments area.. Still, something to ponder during a heat wave...
