I have recorded DVDs that refused to play after only a year or so. There
are different quality blanks available. Make sure you use only the good
stuff; the cheap stuff is no bargain. Here's a great guide to blank media

Also, the advice of those who say they know about these things is to make
a fresh copy of your digital backup media every few years.
