[NJARC] Uncle Bill Henderson's Radios :) :) :)

Joe (and Everyone)- one of the interesting things is
the power supply in this radio: I am pretty sure it
was put together by RCA, as they were using the radio
in their "Equipment Development" section at Lancaster,
although I am not sure when.

While going over it this evening, I noticed some heavy
wax drippings- consistent with a power supply
overheating. It appears the power unit was simply
designed to replace the dynamotor.- one transformer, a
choke, a 5Y3GT tube, large wirewound resistor, couple
electrolytics- Very nicely made, however, I think
something overheated in the past. Although it was
working fine for a couple hours last night, I am
concerned damage may be done if I don't do some mods
to the power unit.

On the bottom of the area is a VERY LARGE condensor
box, which is original, and still in the circuit.
There was heavy wax build up on one corner of the top,
which was also arc blackened- the wirewound resistor
apparently overheated and arced there- there was a
metal band around it, or more correctly, what was left
of a metal band, which crumbled when I touched it.

The transformer supplies the radio through the
original dynamotor terminal strip. The high voltage
reading there is 450+VAC. Should be 228, by the
voltage diagram I have. I checked a couple tube
voltages: low volts are within reason, but the 100 or
250Vs are very high- 100s are over 200, 250 over 400.
Sound like a trashed transformer? And after only a
minute the resistor is quite hot. I have no specs on
the transformer in question, other than it is a Merit
Coil P-1352.

Right now, I am going to disconnect the power cable- I
need to do this to relocate it- currently it simply
pops out the top of the set(very workman like) I am
also going to make a schematic of the power supply. I
am hoping I can simply swap in a new power supply, and
put it into the mix. I am considering A Hammond
HX261M6 (specs- 83 VA, 215V at 269 ma, 6.3v @ 4A) from
Radio Daze, unless I find I have something suitable
here.

All the other electrics look to be original, and the
chassis nice and clean.

Please let me know what you think.
Scott

PS- As to the Hallicrafters, I think they are an
S-16(orSX-16) and S(SX)-20 Both have repair dates
prior to the war, and have the open disk dials. Can't
wait to play with them, as well!
