Scott,
Don't get too excited until you get the paper caps out of the set. Read
both of these:

Get the schematic from BAMA to verify the cap values. Like you say, the
colors get funny with age.
Loose tube bases: Wind kite string tightly around the notch between the
base and glass, and tie. This is a good place for a surgeons knot. Then,
slather the string with old-fashioned glue like Duco cement or Ambroid.
This "kink" comes from a radio service magazine from the '50's and works
well.
