As I read it, the Poles - Rejewski, Rozycki and Zygalski - figured out 
the mathematics
for breaking the Enigma, then built their own version of it from that 
plus the fact that they
had seen a simpler version of it that had been used for encoding 
commercial transactions.
Then from this version of the Enigma, they built a bombe to use in 
breaking the code. These
limited versions of Enigma and the bombe were shown to the British about 
1938 or early
1939. The Poles didn't have the resources needed to keep the work going, 
not to mention
the fact that the Germans invaded in September of '39, so these were 
later transferred to Britain.

Lots of other stuff then happened to keep the Bletchly Park project going.
