Yes, indeed. 
Having lost my confidence of this radio
(which appears to have "restored"), 
I traced the entire circuit and found:
 - 6 components of the wrong value,
 - one wire going to the wrong place, and
 - a missing cathode resistor!

I am now looking into what is making the set 
work so well in spite of these issues.
