 I am new to the club too.



 What I have found in a short period of time, never
assume. Radios come to you in all sorts of condition, post manufacturer
modifications (some good, some bad,) and you never know what the guy before has
done or left. Not only tubes are different, similar, or just not compatible but
you find electrical shorts and wrong value caps in place where you assumed not
and troubleshot for a week otherwise. 



 A tip is get a tube manual "pindex" for known
substitutions and pinouts.
