Ahh! No wonder it was so cheap at the flea market --
it FAILED the smoke test!
Richard Lee and other NJARC members often have
isolation transformers and/or variacs for sale. I
don't have any for sale. You should be able to pick
them up locally, unless you really want something
bright and shiny and new (and overpriced) from the
Web.
You probably already know this, but you can cobble
together a perfectly good isolation transformer from
two filament transformers wired "back-to-back"
(secondary to secondary). If you can find two fairly
husky xformers, say 6.3V at at least 3 or 4 amps, you
can make an isolation transformer. At least as a
temporary unit until something better comes along.
Also note: *most* variacs do *not* provide isolation
from the AC line. So be careful when using a variac,
if you *don't* also have an isolation transformer.
