If I remember correctally,


       The beads, are supposed to absorb certain gasses given off by the

platters after they are manufactured. It is all very slight, but HDDs
are quite 
sensitive. Some also have desicant beads in them (but those are usually
white) 
which absorb any moisture which may get trapped inside. 

                                        This all goes back to somthing I
read 
a few years ago
