[NJARC] a few problems

The circuit for the AK 45 appears to be the same as the 44. To use a
modern speaker, you would need an output transformer. A lot of the
radios in the 50s and 60s had the transformer mounted on the speaker
frame. Why not use an original style speaker from the period? There
are a lot of them around and since the speaker has it's own cabinet, it
would go nicely with the radio. If you just want to hear it play, just
grab a tube radio, clip a couple of wires on the input leads of the
audio output transformer and connect to the speaker posts of the 45 and
it should work. Just don't have the volunteered radio powered up at the
time.

Good luck on the Glorytone. You'll either a) find a sacrificial radio
for parts, b) replace with a modern speaker and use resistors and
capacitors to replace the field coil, c) have someone rewind the field
coil, or d) get lucky searching out that wiring break.

Is the cap in the IF xformer the adjusting type? If so, I've had luck
in removing and disassembling the transformer to get at the capacitors.
Then remove the screw, lift the plate and mica and clean. The silver
likes to migrate. If that is not the style, then remove it by
destroying it and replace with a modern capacitor. It might have to be
mounted on the outside at the terminal lugs. I don't know the value,
maybe 200 picofarads. Some of our knowledgeable people out there have
done it and probably remember the value.
