[NJARC] Atwater Kent question

I am starting to work on a Model 30 Atwater Kent radio.  This is a  first 
attempt with a pre-superhet radio.  When it comes to replacing the  capacitors, 
what is the suggest method to use?  Hide the new parts  underneath?  Gut the 
old parts and insert the new parts?  
    What typical problems might run into when working  on this type of radio? 
 I have schematics and other paper to help.
    Suggestions and guidance greatfully  appreciated.
