Hi Joe
For sure, there are fewer Hamfests everywhere but on the east coast you
still have your pick of which to attend.
I am in Hot Springs, Arkansas, 71901. There are 6 or so each year in
the state. When I was in NJ, there were times in the summer where
there are at least 6 each month. Arkansas has about 1/4 the population
and 5 times the area of NJ. So I expect to have a much longer travel
time. A big event here will have 20 to 30 vendors inside and 2 or
three outside.
Another thing that is different is the starting times. Since there are
few who tailgate, there is no need to get there before the building is
open to the public. True, you can go to sell and get in early and shop
with the other sellers, but...
So what are the NJ Hamfests like now? I guess some are no longer in
the drive-ins and firehouses like I remember but according to the ARRL
calender, there are still quite a few.
I use to kid Bill Overbeck about being on the second set of batteries
when we met at 5AM in the tailgate areas! Then there was always the
problem of staying ahead of Al and Pete, we collect the same kind or
radio!
Regards,
Jim
